Wow $95.00 is a lot. I guess if you live in Orange county California it pays to have your dogs fixed. Even $23.00 is a lot. Here it is $6.00 for a neutered male or spayed female a year and $8.00 if not. Our lifetime ones are $51.00 for a non-neutered male or non-spayed female and $31.00 for a neutered male or spayed female. Plus other fees for the microchip or tattoo, but still no where near what you have to pay. Anyway you have to do it. It is the law. I could just imagine what the fines are if your license cost that much. You are lucky that they didn’t fine you for all the years that you never had one. At least they only sent you a paper to get one now.
I would call them up, either this is a typo or a con(not really animal services).
Get the phone number from another source and speak to them as an expiry date in 2009 doesn’t sound right to send a letter now.
If you are required to pay, I am sorry to tell you that you have to pay to renew the dog license.
Don’t wait till your existing license expire if not you may need to pay fine , with is probably more than $95.00!
And you should call them, it might be a scam!
Do call them and make sure before u write a cheque!
HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL !! $95 ?!!!?
Here it’s $5 for fixed and $15 for unfixed…I would just die !
But then again, here’s the thing…
If you don’t pay it, and by some off-chance your dog gets out and is "arrested"….Geesh, I can’t even imagine how much it would be to get him out of hock…geeeesh.
Here’s the link for the Orange County Animal Control page:

It says that unsterilized animal licenses are $95. If your pet is sterilized, it’s only $23.
LA is cracking down on people who don’t license their pets. This article says that they lost $2M in licensing revenues just in the past few years, and they need it to pay for animal control services.

I’d give them a call. Your rabies tag may expire in 2009, but your city license is only good for 12 months. In your community, they go from July 1st to June 30th, using the fiscal year instead of the calendar year.
Pay it. You have no recourse. They just found out about your dog now. It is considered your responsibility to notify your city when you have in dog (I realize this is counter-intuitive, but that is their attitude) How were you supposed to know about the law?
I wouldn’t tell them how long you’ve had your dog, otherwise they might give you a fine for not getting tags earlier. It is a tax that you can’t avoid. If you contacted animal control and claim you don’t have a dog, they will go to your house an listen for a dog. When they find out someone lies, here comes a fine.
Also the short notice date is typical. If you don’t pay on time, they will also fine you. The issue of expiration date can be politely avoided if they think you have had the dog for over one year.
If they were under the impression that you had the dog for a short time and were ignorant to the law, they will likely not fine you, but expect you to pay for a license.
While $95 seems pretty steep, the most expensive dog is the license for an intact dog.
If you live in Orange County you can’t really get away with telling them your dog died even if it’s tempting with the outrageous prices. You’re better off trying to explain the apparent error in their paperwork. Just make sure that it’s a legitimate letter before you send any money. If you’re not sure ask to drop the money off at their office. Good luck
I would go to the office that sent you that letter and ask about it. Something doesnt seem right. My dogs are 1yr, 12yrs, & 14 years old, and I never had to get a pet license, especially for $95.00. But if I wanted to register them pet licenses are only $5.00 herein Illinois, and $2.00 if they are neutered/spayed. You getting robbed my friend.
I am an Animal Control Officer in Ohio, there are license laws in all 50 states, it just depends on how diligent your local department is about enforcing it. In our area they actually send us out door to door making sure dogs are licensed every february and a couple times thru the year. I would get the license. Odds are if you don’t, they will fine you and you are still legally required to buy the license. If the high cost is because the dog is unaltered you may be able to get the altered dog price if you have a letter from your vet that the dog can not be altered, a 13 yr old dog probably would not survive the surgery. Ohio will accept age and health as a reason not to alter, but it should have been altered years ago. For us, each county sets the price, but it is based at $8 for an altered dog. Our county charges $12 for an altered dog, but that doubles after january 31st of each year. unaltered dogs are double the cost. There is no reason to lie about how long you have had the dog, they can not fine you for previous years.
