Dog License/shot/vet question?
My dog is a Chihuahua and he is going to be 4 years old this June. I have many questions to ask. First off, when we first got him we took him to the vet and he got all of the necessary shots including the Rabies. Then we got the ok to get him a license. and after that, we haven’t taken him to the vet since, and we haven’t gotten him a license. If I were to take him to get a license now, would I get in trouble? Or if I were to start taking him to the vet again would I get in trouble? I really want to start doing it, but I just don’t want to get in trouble since I have neglected it for a pretty long time now. He is a house dog, and he rarely goes outside, only when i take him on a leash to the bathroom and stuff, so are shots other than the rabies one really necessary? I am just so confused and don’t know what to do! I need help!

i had my dog for about 3 1/2 yrs now and the only time i took her to the vet was for her free check up. I have gotten the necessary shot and took her to the groomers. recently i took her back to the vet and the vet said she was ok but that it is best if she were seen at lease once a year. my advise is get the dog it’s shots. it will be once a year the then every three.
No, you wouldn’t get in trouble.
Your local animal control wants him licensed. Just make sure his Rabies vaccine is up to date and he has been neutered.
Usually they have a first rabies vaccine at 16 weeks old and that is good for a year. The next Rabies vaccines would be good for 3 years.
And, no, you would not be in trouble if you took your dog to vet.
Your dog may possibly be in trouble later if you DON’T take him to the vet. Since he hasn’t had a check up in 3-4 years, you want to go to the vet to make sure he is healthy. Not vaccinating him for a long time is leaving him open to catching some form of disease. Since he is mostly a house dog it is less likely that he would catch anything, but keeping his vaccines up-to-date helps him fight off any virus he may come into contact with.
At your next Vet visit, they will examine him, probably want to give him vaccines and do a routine fecal test. This screens for any internal parasites that can be picked up in the environment. This is highly recommended for familes with young children since some parasites can be transmitted to little kids. So bring a stool sample with you.
They will give you vaccine & Rabies certificates and then you will be able to get him licensed with those. If he isn’t neutered, get him neutered. It is better for his health, his behavior and usually licensing doesn’t cost you as much.
Your dog does not need ANY more vaccines the rest of his life and while you may have thought and others might think that you were being negligent, you were actually doing what is right as far as vaccines go. Trust me.. your dog is MUCH healthier and better off the more they can stay away from the vets office and useless and harmful over vaccination.
You will need a rabies shot to get his lisence but if I were you and 4 years had passed, I’d rather not! Once vaccinated as puppies they are immune to the core diseases for life. Are YOU getting your baby shots every year or 3 for the rest of your life? Immunity does not suddenly expire. Your dog is fine and not at risk for diseases as vets and others would have you believe. The information is available.. Not sure why people are not willing to learn it and use it. ? Vaccines are dangerous chemicals and drugs passed out like candy for the all mighty dollar. Science backs my statements on the subject. The studies have been done to prove vaccines last for a lifetime. Giving the same vaccines year after year and year or every 3 years is and NEVER has been supported by science.
That’s a choice up to you but PLEASE research the latest info on Vaccines and make yuour decision accordingly. Forget about what was supposed to have been done to your dog all these years. He is much better off.
Please check out some links and feel GREAT about his not having any current vaccines! He is one of the LUCKY ones!
By the way, rabies is the only one by law. You are not going to get in trouble by anyone. This is your dog and othe rthen rabies the vaccines are YOUR choice.
Good Luck and I hope you do the reading I have provided and ignore anyone who says you have done some type of an injustice to your dog.

Instead of buying useless and damaging vaccines, pick up the book called Shock to the system by Catherine O’Driscoll.
You will forever be greatful for what you learn.
greyfluffykitty and others..
You are mistaken to say that some are against vaccines because they feel it is better the dog works off its own antibodies… THAT is not the reason.
The reason is because science has proved that the core vaccines last 7 years (end of study) and thought to last for life which only makes sense. You seriously need to research the subject and stop over vaccinating your own animals. Asking the vet is NOT the way to go because many/most of them are refusing to utilize the new protocols and are also ignoring the facts. It is up to YOU to research it and do what is right for your dogs and cats.
Those of us who choose not to vaccinate are doing so simply because we have learned it is not necessary and that vaccines cause damage to an immune system and a huge array of other issues.
We are not just making this stuff up. The facts are available from the leading scientist in the field. The very people who are leading the way in vaccine studies and changing the way vets are SUPPOSED to do things.
40% of a vets income is derived from vaccines and heartworm, flea and tick prevention.. You simply can not rely on them to be the most honest about these issues with so much financial loss at stake. It’s not going to happen unless forced by law.
There are people who are suing for mal practice with over vaccination because they are not being told. It is plain and simple crime by deception to give medicines with out warrant. Vaccines are NO different then if a vet were to put a dog on any other drug they didn’t need that caused harm.
WHEN are people going to wake up to this issue and stop running around like puppets on a string doing things just because some vet or uneducated pet owner tells them to?
Don’t be fearful – just call a vet, say you need shots and you think it’s been a while. You are, by far, not the only one in this situation.
The "bad" news, if you will, is that had you taken your dog for another rabies shot at the one year mark, you would have been set for three years! But as you didn’t, you will have to get a shot this year and then another next year. Then, you might be fine for three years.
As for the city, once you get this new rabies shot, just apply for the license. Don’t reveal anything more than you have to. If *they* catch that you haven’t been paying for your dog lately, you may have to pay back some fees. But don’t worry too much about this. The annual license fee is usually $10 (sometimes less). So maybe you’ll have to pay $30 to catch up. It’s not a big issue and you should do fine.
Keep in mind that even though your dog needs his rabies shot to keep him properly immunized and so that he can be license, he will also get other shots for other canine illnesses. It’s just as important to keep him current on those. Plus, you should take your dog for an annual exam, even though he is young, to assure that he’s doing well. If he has teeth problems, heart problems, liver problems, etc., it’s best to catch them early.
Bottom line: Don’t be afraid. Many owners get a bit lax. The good news is that you are ready to correct it and you are doing so before your dog gets ill.
u shouldnt have a damn dog. what the hell is wrong with u? u r an irresponsible, lazy A$$!!!!!!!!!! yes infact other shots are necessary. u didnt take him to the vet since u got him!!!! for 4 freakin years!!!! u neglected the fact ur dog needs to go to a vet !! i hope ur jokin!!! OMG I COULD REPORT U AND TAKE UR DOG AWAY! and yes i would take it to a LICENSED VET! OH NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN OR ANYTHING but I HOPE U DO GET IN TROUBLE! just take ur dog to a vet. my god! what is wrong with u
You must bring your dog to the vet. as soon as you can. Dogs must have their yearly anti rabbies shots, medicines from preventing them having fleas. Registration or license as what you’ve said, must be renewed yearly. I think you will not get in trouble if you go to the vet. now. Not doing right procedures will get you in a bigger trouble as well as your dog.I’m also a dog lover that’s why. Have a nice day.
You will not get in trouble. Trust me, you are not the first person they see who has not vaccinated their pets in a long time. Some people are against vaccination because they feel it is better for the dogs own antibodies to work (if you take this method, though, you should get an antibodies test). However, it is very important your dog get a yearly exam including a heartworm test. Additionally, neutering will be beneficial.
If your dog is a house dog and does not interact with other pets your dog is not as high of risk. However, the risk is still there. Speak to your vet and find out how many vaccinations your dog needs (if at all).
Here’s what you do.. You vow to quit being so darned lazy.. Then you call the vet, make the appointment and tell them that he hasn’t had shots since such and such a date. They will give him his shots so that he is current. You get him neutered, so that the license will be cheaper. And sometimes even dogs that are microchipped are cheaper to license..
Then you take that to the licensing office and you hand it to the lady at the counter, you pay for your license. You put your rabies tag and your license tag on your dog’s collar. You go home and you take the receipt for the shots and stick it on the monitor of your computer.. In one year, if the vet doesn’t send you a reminder notice.. You call and make an appointment and get his vaccinations done again.
When you don’t vaccinate your dog, you risk his life, not only that but you risk other dog’s lives because your dog could be carrying a disease. Not fair to other dogs to get sick just cause you didn’t do what is required of you? You won’t get into trouble, they would rather you be in there doing the right thing than to be busting people for being lazy.
