Horse people I have a Q for you?
Let me first say that I don’t know much about horses, just admire them for the same reasons many of you do..
I found this ad on craplist and I admit that I am confused by it…

Dxxx,as we call her), is a gorgeous 16 hand Oldenburg mare with a great attitude and a scopy, athletic jump. She is 12 years old, safe, sound, and HONEST. Dxxx is primarily trained as a jumper, and is comfortable and consistent over 4-foot courses. She is quiet enough to ride as a hunter, and has some dressage training and potential as well. Dxxxx’s "mom" is looking for an experienced, reliable rider to partial lease her, and help keep her fit while "mom" travels (she’s a flight attendant). Lease fees are:
1 Day/Week: 0
2 Days/Week: 0
3 -4 Days/Week: 0
(Plus a nominal fee to cover shoes and incidentals).

So, this person wants someone to come to her house, ride her horse to keep HER fit while "Mom" is working BUT I have to pay HER for the RIGHT to do that????
If I go 1 day a week, I pay HER 0????
Is leasing horses a common practice in the horse world?
Is this something that you do?
Please know that I DO understand that it takes LOTS of money to own and keep up a horse…But WHY charge someone a fee if they are going to come to exercise YOUR horse while YOU are working???
Horse owner gets their horse exercised, rider gets the pleasure of riding a horse…WHY the fee??
Makes me want to write my own ad……
Have a GREAT dog, obedience trained, will heel, retrieve on command, friendly to other dogs and cats. You can come to my house and walk her to keep her fit while Mom is at work. Has agility training and will run through tunnels, weave poles, fly over the A Frame and get on the pause table with a flick of the wrist….

SORRY, I know I am being rude with my ‘dog’ ad and do NOT mean to be. Yes, a dog can cost 0 from the shelter and horse can cost ,000 or MORE, but I just don’t understand the ad. This is the first time I have seen an ad like this and do not know if this is a common practice in the horse world…

Leasing is a common practice in the horse world for people who don’t want to sell their horses but aren’t interested or don’t have the time for them. That is a bit pricey though, i paid 250 and 150 (separate barns) to ride the horse for the whole month, the 250 one there were a few lesson kids riding him, but not doing anything big like i was, and the 150 one I solely rode the horse, I now own her. But yes leasing is very common, it helps out a lot of people who can’t afford a horse.
Leasing is a pretty common thing, but you’re right, what she’s asking is kind of ridiculous. If "mom" isn’t able to ride the horse and is concerned about keeping her fit her terms are unfair. $150 is most likely a monthly fee but for a single day of riding is a ludicrous price. My trainer has a high level dressage horse half leased for $250 a month and you get to ride 4 days a week but the lessee doesn’t have to cover the cost of shoes or the vet unless the horse is hurt because the rider is negligent.
If the horse is boarded that is why she is asking a fee, to help with the board so the horse can stay where she is. If you were going to take the horse to your own place you would do a free lease where you would pay the owner nothing but be responsible for all other calls.

That aside, yes, leasing horses is something some people choose to do (I’m not a fan of it though and don’t do it). Paying for things like shoes and some of the vet bill are a part of some leases.
However, $150 a week is very steep. That lady is totally crazy!! $150 a month is more along the lines of normal.
I think in this instance, she hopes somebody is swayed by the horse’s breed to pay that price. Oldenburgs can be pretty $$$. I’d much rather pay for a few lessons a week than ride her fancy horse once a week, though – $150 can buy a few lessons with a really good trainer, and that would be a much better investment.

I would never do that. Not for a fee of that outrageous price! You could get a nice foal for 250 bucks! You could get a REALLY good horse at an auction for 150! jeesh. Wanna punch that person out for me?

yea if mom is at work and needs someone to ride the horse she needs to pay someone to ride her horse!!!!
Actually, that mare sounds like an excellent horse, and for a rider without a horse, or a rider that cannot afford the upkeep of their own horse, it would be a great opportunity to ride a high quality horse.
Leases and part leases are fairly common in the horse world.
I am assuming that the owners prices are by the month. if they are by the week then she may be asking a bit to much depending on where she is located.
That particular horse, if she is as described is probably worth over 25,000 dollars and potentially more. Since horse board typically starts at about 300 dollars a month and can be well over 500 dollars a month depending on location, shoes at least 80 dollars (probably more) at least every six weeks, yearly vet care (not including accidents, illnesses or joint therapy) will start at at least 300 dollars. Most high dollar horses are kept on expensive joint supplements (probably at least 60 dollars a month, probably more)
So, for the right rider that cannot afford their own horse, or a horse of that caliber, that’s probably a great deal. 250 dollars a month is probably not even half the cost of her upkeep.
Free leases or care leases are also fairly common in the horse world, which is where you provide the care and upkeep on the horse (as agreed between the two parties) and you get to use the horse.
Now if the horse was untrained, it would be totally unreasonable, and if the horse was unremarkable, maybe a little pricey, but that mare sounds really nice.
I do realize that it sounds kinda funny to the non horse person though.

i work two days a week, and ride 3 days a week.
i do that all for zero dollars, though i did buy most of his tack. but all the work is worth it. luckily i found the right people with the right horse!

a partial lease usually means the person can come over 3-5 days a week and ride the horse as if it were their own, but with limitations. it depends on the individual lease…some people allow their horses to be taken to shows and on trails, while others only let you ride their horse at their barn. so the $150 usually covers about half the cost of the veterinarian fee, farrier fee, etc. basically, it’s like shared ownership, which is why you have to pay them to lease their horse.sorry if that was confusing…i tried to explain it the best i could…
Either I can’t read, or no one else so far can. I am seeing $150.00 to ride this horse one day per week. I don’t see anything indicating that this is a monthly fee. That adds up to $600.00 per month, for 4 days of riding. And of course, you can’t ride a horse all day unless it is a conditioned endurance horse (NOT). Also,this great horse might be being ridden by several different leasees each week, which might have the horse just a little bit confused, so you get to spend your riding time trying to deal with the problems that creates. So, this deal seems quite out of the ordinary according my years of experience. If she can get that, I’m going into the horse leasing business !
Oh…..I missed the nominal fee to pay for shoes and incidentals…….silly me, of course $150.00 a day would not cover that !
