How many of you keep your dog on heartworm meds all year round?

I am just curious. I only have mine on heartworm medication 6 months out of the year. (May-October)
I’m in Minnesota, so we don’t have mosquitoes in the winter.

Here in South Texas, I give my dog Interceptor every month.
all year–Interceptor
It depends on where you live. When I lived in San Fran I never used it but when I was in New Orleans I used it 12 months out of the year. Now I live in NC and use it until the first snow.
I keep mine on it all year only because of where I live(Oklahoma). Our mosquito’s are pretty bad and I just don’t take the chance of my babies getting ill from them or any other bugs.
Your only supposed to give it to your dog for 6 months out of the year.
In Texas, and in the South, we have mosquitos all year around, so I have to give my dog heartworm medicine every month.
sorry to keep banging on . but heartworm is not present in the uk ( the same as rabies ) , you seem to have your dog well protected though~~big thumbs up from me~~~

I am in Oklahoma, and I keep my dogs and cat (even though hes an indoors kitty) on Revolution year-round. There are way too many bugs all the time, even in December sometimes, to not keep them on it regularly.
Same here. I used to give it year round when I lived down south. Now I am in Vermont and only have him on it 5-6 month of the year depending on the climate. He is almost 9 and never had a problem.
I definitely feel bad for the dogs and/or cats that are not given a heartworm preventive. heartworm disease can be treated but the chances of Pulmonary thromboembolism after treatment is high with an often lessened life. Like many others I sure can’t imagine anything happening to my baby.
Our vet told us to give out puppy heartworm every month for 9 months.
I have never had any of my dogs on heart worm preventative.
There is a irrigation ditch 5 houses away & I live with in 5 to 6 blocks from a river. Yes, there are lots of mesiqutoes but out of 50 or 60 dogs over a 30 year period I have not had one dog have a problem with heart worms.
I live in Florida, Bella takes her heartworm once a month. It is very inexpensive and can save the dogs life. I see no reason to not try to prevent a health issue.
I live in Florida, all of mine are on flea, tick, and heartworm meds year round.
In colder climates like New England, Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, etc there is no need to give heartguard year round…there are no mosquitoes year round…
***Bluebonnet..it is foolish not to have your dogs get their heartworm tests on a yearly basis and to get them on heartworm prevention..you could end up costing your dog it’s life..heartworms are more prevelant now then they were just 5- 10 years ago*****
I keep my dogs on heartworm meds all year around. I live north of Chicago, by Wisconsin and we had two days in February last year when the temp went above 50. The mosquitoes were out immediately. Your dog can get infected at any time during the calendar year.
I once lost a dog to heartworm, and I never want to go through that experience again.
It’s a must to keep them all year! Timing could be wrong on when to take them off–if you really love and care for them–keep them on it all year–don’t be so cheap!
