Injured Cat – Should I Take It On?
I know the title looks bad, but Im a member of an animal forum, there was a lady that came on to say that she needs to rehome her cat. She lives close to me (Northern Ireland) all the other members are in England.
The cat was involved in a RTA, it needed its hips pinned. The lady said that it is just recently out of a cast and it all cost her £300. She said the reason she wants to rehome it is because shes on a main road and scared that the next time the cat will be killed, as it will no longer be as quick as it was before.
We live in a quiet area, well away from any main road. I phoned our pet insurance company who said they can insure the cat but if it needs more treatment on the same injury that they will not pay out. I contacted the lady who said that as far as shes aware, the cat will not need more treatment.
If this has happened to anyone else, when your cat got out of a cast, did it need more treatment? Our dog is to go in to have a lump removed and we have to pay the £150 excess. We arent poor but at the minute we couldnt afford any high vet bills.
Just off the phone to our vet, he said it may need pain killers but its very doubtful as the healing should be nearly over. He said if it does need any treatment that he can work out a payment plan – so I guess we got a new kitty lol.

I had a dog that had to have a hip pinned after…well, it was pretty bad. The dog was fine, but did have a wee touch of a limp when he’d overdone activity. As he got older, he developed a little arthritis which accentuated the limp and sometimes was a little painful (but arthritis is anyway), but otherwise he was absolutely fine after his operation, and lived a good long life dying of plain ol’ old age.
Good luck, and I suspect all will be well.
Hi i haven’t had this happen to me but a friends cat had the same injury, but he never needed further treatment, but it depends how bad the break was have you had all the details? i can understand the owners fear of it getting killed next time, but your area sounds ideal for a cat that’s had such trauma! so if you have the time to nurse it better i would consider doing it.
Hi Bits. What a responsible question. I like the sound of your forum. You all seem very caring.
Obviously no-one can predict whether this cat will need further treatment but I would say it’s a risk worth taking.
Good luck to you all.
Why don’t you see if you can’t speak with the vet that treated the cat? I’m a bit cynical, as being involved in rescue we hear all sorts of – well, I’ll just call them mis-truths. She may be speaking the truth, or perhaps not. But a chat with the vet will get you in a position where you can make an informed decision about if this is something you can afford to take on or not. Good luck!
