My dog was prescribed heartworm medication. He took his pill three days ago, and now there are white worms coming out his butt. Also a few months ago he was given a shot for a different type of worm. Are they coming out because of the medication? Is this normal?

Heartworm medication is a preventative medication used to prevent heartworms. It does not kill heartworms.
What you are seeing are intestinal worms. This is a whole different catagory. You will need to get some dewormer to feed your dog. They make it in tablets or liquids. It is impossible for me to tell you what kind they are, it depends on the area of the country you live in and environment. It would be best to get a stool sample and drop it off at the vet’s office and then they will tell you what kind they are and give you some medication.
There are also over the counter dewormers, but ask your vet which one to use if you go that route.
Remember, you will need to deworm your dog every 12-14 days for the next couple months. This will kill the worms off for good because they are at different life stages while in the pup’s system.
In the meantime, make sure your pup has plenty of water and mild food. This is something you should deal with as soon as you can.
Good luck!
probably worms====== 1 word=VET
Well that means he has worms. Take him to the vets. they will take a fecal sample.
Yes, the worms are coming out, thats good, give it some time and more medication. Keep your dog outside until this is gone.
Heart worms are different than the ones coming out of his butt. The parasites coming out his butt need to be taken care of seperately. Go to the vet and get him de-wormed. They are perfectly normal. In fact, most puppies have worms to begin with and need to be de-wormed 2 or 3 times. Older dogs should be checked anually.
White worms coming out rectally are usually tape worms and would not be caused by heartworm medication.
They are usually caused by fleas. You can get deworming pills from your vet.

That probably meens that your dog ether has tapeworms or heart-worms you should take him to a vet
The medication he had for the heartworms has made a bad environment for OTHER worms he also had – poor guy!
Speak to the vet about what to do about this – you may have to wait a while for the other medication to run through his system, before getting the droncit for the tapeworm.
In the meantime, be very careful to wash your hands, and keep him where he is not in contact with kids or other dogs – you don’t want anyone else to get tapeworm, which si often shed in sections that break off from the main worm in his GI tract.
Yeah, EEEUw.
By the way, did your vet treat him for wolbachia with doxycycline before teating him for the heartworm? It can make the treatment go much more smoothly..
take your dog to the vet for a fecal test. heartworm medication won’t have any effect on intestinal parasites. white worms that look like spaghetti are rounds worms, but white worm segments that look like rice are tape worms. both need treated by your vet, and they are treated by different drugs. you will never see heartworms. they are in the heart, lungs and blood vessels. Make sure you clean up after the dog, especially if small children are around. several kinds of parasites can be transmitted from pets to people.
Here are a few of the most familiar heartworm treatments, along with the parasite (worms) that these products help fight and rid the body of this worms.
