I realize this can vary from state to state (I happen to live in a state where this practice is allowed) and even agent to agent.

Please let me know if you’re aware of any home owner’s insurance companies that do not discriminate against particular dog breeds. We don’t have a dog yet, but plan to get one in the spring. Two of the breeds we’re most interested in, Husky & German Shepard, are on the list of dogs many insurances companies inaccurately consider dangerous.

I checked the AKC website, and it only gives tips on how to negotiate with the companies. Our current insurer told us they’d write the policy without mention of any dog, and told us to not inform them when we do get a dog (i.e. don’t ask, don’t tell). I’m not really comfortable with that, especially since our current agent is close to retirement.

On the rare chance you’re in my part of the world, this policy would be for the St. Louis area. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
I asked around my office too and it seems like State Farm has come out as the most recommended company for dog friendliness.

I will be attending University of Colorado at Boulder. Will I be able to major in Integrative Physiology & still be able to complete the path to starting my career as a veterinarian? If not, what are my other options?

I went to a pet store one day & saw that they offered prepackaged raw food. However, it was not refrigerated. It was cylindrical in shape & kept in one of those plastic wraps with the little twists at the end (you know, the ones you typically see sausage in?).

I went to this pet store a long time ago, so bear with me. I can’t recall the name of the pet food, I just remember finding it odd that raw meat could be left out like that without spoiling. I’m starting to think that maybe I just read the package wrong? Or maybe there is some way of preserving raw meat without refrigeration that somehow managed to slip by me? Or is it possibly ridden with chemical preservatives, which leads me to my next question: is storing it in this fashion at all detrimental to its quality?

I’m really curious to hear your answers because though I’ve heard talk of prepackaged raw food, I have yet to see a freezer at my local pet supply stores, Lol.
The brand, "Nature’s Logic" offers raw diets, and I just emailed them asking a few questions about their products, including the question of how they keep their raw diets fresh. The man conveniently answered all my questions BUT the one concerning raw food!

It must be a secret! :o

I replied telling him I’m still waiting on an answer from my previous question, Lol!
He just replied. Here’s what he wrote,

"Our raw food is produced and then flash frozen at 30 below zero and is then stored at zero degrees even during transporting to the distributors and stores. Thousands of stores around the country have frozen food and freezers in their stores."

He then went on to suggest that anyone feeding prepackaged raw freeze it until use.

Sadly, his answer doesn’t solve the mystery, but at least we know Nature’s Logic is doing it right, and that there are pet stores with freezers.
I just looked at some pictures and I’m pretty sure Natural Balance is the brand I saw!

Why exactly is freeze drying? How is it done? I’ve heard of it, but I have no clue what it means.

How much will a knee xray cost for a dog?

My dog needs his hind knee x-rayed. We live in Oregon. His vet quoted me about 0 because he will need to be sedated. Is this typical? This seems exorbitantly expensive to me.

Please don’t answer with "it depends". I’m looking for actual NUMBERS please. From people who actually know instead of just guessing & typing down any random answer for yahoo points. Thanks.

A few other questions as well…

My pet insurance told me that pet fees are higher in my area than in many other states. Would it be worth the drive to Washington (about 45 minutes) to get reduced rates? What will that do for my ability to take him somewhere closer for cheaper and more routine things that will happen with more frequency? Is it worth being established at a very faraway vet to save some money on an xray and surgery?

Also, is it really going to be worth the trouble of calling around to find out? I already had to do quite a bit of calling around when the problem initially arose and I settled on a clinic that had moderate prices & had a good feeling about. They are very reasonable for routine things. However, I’m finding it really hard to believe how much they charge for diagnostic and surgical care.

The reason this even got brought up is because I had a friend who only paid about 0 for his dog’s (major) knee-repair surgery, and I was quoted 00 for a (minor) knee-repair surgery. Before I found this out I didn’t question a thing. Now I’m wondering. My clinic did say that his doctor is a noted knee speicalist though, would that have something to do with it?

How do you find out if a breeder is reputable?

I have been searching Petfinder to find a dog for a long time. While there are many many adorable dogs, most of the ones i have liked are all out of state or way older than i would like. I refuse to go to a pet store because i do not want to support puppy mills. I would not mind getting a dog from a reputable breeder, as i believe they would be knowledgeable about the breed & provide the love and care every animal needs. My question is: How do i know if they are reputable? I have seen some ads in the newspaper with websites that i have visited. In one of these ads, the dogs are adorable, but they are raising about 8-10 different breeds of puppies! Is it possible for them to provide a good quality of care to this many at once, or is there a way i can find out if this is a puppy mill?
Also, as i said before, i would love to adopt but most of the dogs i have seen are out of state. Does anyone know of any type of transport service? I had heard about one a long time ago but my memory is fuzzy. I refuse to ship an animal, but i’m wondering if there is some sort of transport where one animal lover will hand off to another if they are headed this way.

When I was in construction in 2003 (1999-2004), a crossbeam that holds up scaffolding fell from two stories & knocked me out. I’m not sure when I came to, but it wasn’t too much later. Although the sharp edge of it struck my head, it didn’t crack my skull, but what I’m concerned about is the possibility of brain damage by the impact.

Before the injury, I didn’t have much problem with memory, I just didn’t care. After that injury, my memory has been like a fog. I can’t remember much of my past unless a specific deja-vu sets a memory off. This is a major problem, because I’m in college right now; and they don’t care how bad your memory is. I don’t believe good/bad memory has anything to do with intelligence, but hey; they’re set in their ways.

As it said in the question, I do not have enough money or health insurance for a brain scan (cat-scan). so I can’t even prove to the college that there’s anything wrong; despite the fact that I know something’s wrong. I need a way around this, and I need a bloody cat-scan.
The business wasn’t legitimate. I was payed out of pocket, and now it’s out of business, so I can’t sue either.

Is natural/organic dog food worth it?

I currently feed my 14 week cocker spaniel Eukanuba puppy food. I’ve heard that it is a great brand, but lately I’ve been thinking about going natural/organic with his food. I want to know if I do, is it worth it (price difference, hassle, etc.). Anyone who feeds there dog natural/organic food please let me know what kind you think is best & why you think it is/isn’t better for them. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
While I don’t know who is giving everyone a thumbs down, I appreciate all the information greatly. I’ve been doing some research and it does seem that Eukanuba isn’t the best food after all. Now the hunt begins for something with better ingredients! Thanks so much to everyone!

What's a good pet insurance?

Looking for insurance for my new puppy. I’m most worried about emergency accidents, common health problems, & cancer. I don’t need it to cover well checks or shots, I don’t mind paying outright for those.

Our youngest cat was neutered yesterday & is already back to his sweet self. We had to delay his surgery til after the holidays & he’d already begun to "spray". It’s been over 10 years since we’ve had a kitty altered because this has usually been done @ the rescue but we found this kid as a stray. So, can someone remind me, how long will it be before he consistently thinks *inside* the box?

My husband and I are renting his parents old house. The problem is, that I recently have been diagnosed with pet allergies… and his parents had several pets living in that house (for 30 yrs). To avoid those pesky allergies I’ve experienced since moving into that house, we would like to move. We want to buy a house as opposed to renting again (it’s such a waste of money).

The problem is that I have bad credit. I’m wondering if my bad credit would get us turned down for a home loan?

I was a single Mother before I recently got married. I had some tough times and wasn’t able to pay bills. Which is how I got the bad credit. In addition, I have unpaid medical bills from my son & I not having health insurance.

I am currently working on repairing my credit… but it will take time… and we need to move soon!!!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I’m going away for 2 weeks & my choice is to either board my Siberian Husky at Petco hotels or leave him home in the yard & have a reliable service come over once a day to feed him & check on him. Any suggestions on which is a better plan?
