What to do with stray cats?

There was a female cat left behind when a couple moved from our town. They lived next to us. The female cat is not spayed of course and it was left outside to defend for itself. Male cats come down near our house because they know there are females. The one female multplied into a bunch more, but now there are only two adult females left overall because the elements must have gotten the best of them. Those two females then had a litter of kittens each producing about 8-9 kittens. Again the elements took over and now there are four kittens left. Aside from that we had already caught two adults who unfortunately passed away due to health problems. We have been feeing them continuously since we knew they were there. My sister is verya tatched to them and now calls them her "outside cats". The male cats are coming around again meaning that the there are at least now 3 reproductive females, hence, more lil kittens. We have don’t really have a local spca, the cloest is a hr away and the so called organization around here will not return my emails when I ask for help with them. Anyway, my sisters wants to be able to keep them but they are wild now and they do have Feline Leukemia because the two that had passed away had it. I have two cats inside of my own. We are wondering how we can help them. She had plans of building a house-like building for them but would that work seeing how they are wild? What other options are there?

What pet insurance do you use for your dog and what does it cover? Can you give me the link for it. Also what medication do you use monthly (do you use it monthly or weekly) for heart worm, fleas, ticks, and etc. Also explain what health problems this package covers, and do you have a link for this site also? Please and thank you.

Also I last time I forgot to mention I live in SO. CALIFORNIA, so something available that ships over here. Last time I got this incredible answer, to bad it only delivered to residences in Canada.
*The medication because it makes sure they don’t have/or get fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Or am I thinking about this backwards?
I don’t think we have much ticks around here if I think about it, but we have worms, not A LOT but just enough to get your dog sick.
KiKi: No. The insurance will not cover already existing health problems. But if you got the insurance (one that fits your needs, look through different ones or get referrals) before it would have covered most of it. I advise you to get one before something else rises up.

Overweight Felines?

I have 2 very active 2year old cats that are putting on weight, our male is already overweight (though not to an extreme point), and our female is well on her way to becoming overweight. They are both fixed. I need a diet plan that is thorough in nutrition as well as keeping the cat full. I need complete nutrition because I also have an 11 month old kitten who is not overweight and is still growing.

Please help, I really want to keep my cats healthy! They are to young to have health problems. And are fed suggested portions 1 time daily, and that feeds them for the full day. Also the older female was born with a heart murmur and while the vet said its gone, I don’t want the weight of stress to cause further problems.

Suggestions on food types, feeding tips, and "rationing" would be greatly appreciated. Experiences will help too!

Thanks a bunch!

Anyone have Dog Medical Insurance?

Is it worth it? What company do you use and can you tell me about how much it is monthly? Are the co-pays reasonable?
Our dog Maggie has had a few health problems, and may have ongoing skin problems. We just spent a lot on Mange medicines, for the Derma-something Mange. And she has serious anxiety issues…she’s not an inexpensive dog! I’m wondering if doggy insurance is the way to go!
Thanks, I appreciate all the help and advice I get in this section!

My cat is majorly depressed, and it is affecting his health. He is almost 13 years old, and about a year ago, he lost his "little sister," my 11 year old cat who was with him from kittenhood. Since then, we have also moved house several times, and in an attempt to cheer him up and provide company, I brought in two kittens. He goes back and forth with the kittens (they’ve been together since May now), sometimes being loving and other times biting at them and smacking. He has also suffered his first health problems of his life, but he should be feeling better by now. He has developed feline acne that we have treated with all kinds of washes and antibiotic creams, and it won’t go away. When I looked up possible causes, stress was mentioned as a factor.

It has come to the point that I just don’t know what to do for him, and the vet visits haven’t helped at all. He has a loving, doting family, but the stress has just been too much on him.

What can I do?

Just want another kitten opinion/perspective!?

* I am reposting this, the other answer is very helpful, I just want more perspectives.

I have never had a cat before (only dogs) but I have decided now is the time to get one. I can only get one as I dont think I have enough space for 2 but I am around a lot to give it the attention and play it will need. I am looking into adopting a kitten that was born to a ferel barn cat (I believe) and it will have all its shots (distemper, rabies), be fixed, and have been tested for feline leukemia. I am wondering if cats that are wild are prone to having many health problems? I am financially stable however I worry about getting into a situation where there are many health issues, I would never just give up a sick pet though, just want to be smart in making my decision. If anyone has advice or expereince with cats that were wild and their health, I’d really appreciate it!!! Thank you, sorry I’m rambling, but I’m just really excited, but nervous about taking such a big step in my life.

I have been reading up on wondering what by products mean in dry or canned pet food. I have a dog and it worries me that these by products are claimed to be left overs from parts of animals not used in a slaughter house or groceries stores. Plus the added artificial flavors, vitamins, and minerals have been discovered by the agriculture department they are not even close to being suitable for a pets nutrition after doing chemical tests on dry food. To make matters worse proven tests and reports state canned food is actually euthanize dogs/cats processed with added corn/carrots/etc. Now you wonder why dog/cat food stinks when you open that bag and get that icky stinch? All and all it makes me wonder why our four legged companions are having less and less life spans than they typically average with the on going progression of diseases and cancer problems. The health problems in dogs and cats used to not be this way but it’s getting worse because of the crap that is processed in pets food. I don’t like the idea of putting food in my dogs tummy when not even able to pronounce the ingredient or understand what it is 100%.

So what is the best diet to put my dog on???

Which is a good pet insurance for dogs?

I was just wanting to know if anyone has a good pet insurance company they use. I’m thinking of paying for insurance for my girl, I’ve had her for 8 years. She doesn’t have any health problems, really, but stuff happens. I just don’t want her to develop something like arthritis or something worse, and me not be able to afford to care for her, and have to put her down. That’d be horrible. My husband does not want to spend a lot of money on "just a dog" in an event like that, but she’s my baby and I want to make sure she’s taken care of. I figure if I have insurance on her then we won’t be put in such a tight spot if something happens.

My daughter has brought home a kitten, and it’s blind. I know that doesn’t mean it definitely HAS meningoencephalitis, but I know that the blindness can be caused by an infection (viral, bacterial, or protozoal). I wanted to know if humans can catch anything from a feline (it’s a little kitten) specifically meningoencephalitis or encephalitis. I plan to take him to the Vet in the morning, since we don’t know what caused him to go blind, or if he has any other health problems. Should I be worried or not?? I’ve never heard of anyone catching anything from a cat, but you never know.
I guess I should’ve mentioned that the kitten is about 4-5 months old, he could see when he was born, but a friend of my daughter’s took him home and I don’t think he cared for him properly. My daughter got the kitten this weekend and his eyes are both blue now (they were green). You can tell by looking at his eyes and the fact that he runs into everything he is blind, sorry I left that out the first time.

I have a cat……?

My 5 year old cat has been diagnosed with Feline Leukemia. We have been going in about once a month to get a steroid injection because of a recurring infection in the back of her mouth. The vet told me that steroid injections as a long term treatment is not good but she does so well when she gets these shots!

How does the repeated treatment of steroids affect cats?

What other health problems does this create?

Thanks!
~~Corrin
Putting her down is definately not an option right now because there is no need. I have no other cats. I took in a stray kitten and at the first vet appointment we got the bad news. This is how my 5 y/o contracted FIV. Unfortunately, the kitty never recouperated from being spayed and we had to let her go on April 11th. I am not looking forward to this again but I know it will have to be done at some point.

I am torn between having a full mouth extraction done to avoid many more lesions in her mouth or steroid injections (which works really well) but are not good long term.

Has anyone had to make this decision too?

Which pet insurance company to go with?

I’m adopting a 4 year old cocker spaniel this weekend. So I have to choose a vet, and which, if any, pet insurance company to go with. He has no health or behavioral problems at all right now, other than being a pound or two overweight (he’s 34 pounds) due to inactivity. But, I also know that health problems can be a big concern with cocker spaniels. I’m mainly looking at PetsBest (doesn’t cover many hereditary conditions), Banfield (website doesn’t say what they don’t cover, only what they do), and PetPlan (covers all hereditary, but no preventive care).
I want (or think I want) preventive care, but some people say it’s "paying a to get less than a back." Is it necessary? If I decided not to get preventive care, I would go with PetPlan. I’m kind of worried that Banfield(Petsmart) only covers preventive care.
Is pet insurance really necessary for me?
…How did I get screwed? I haven’t bought a policy yet. o.O

We are thinking of getting a 9-10 year old chihuahua…gets along with cats, very friendly, great for our apartment…super personality. Overall great dog. I’m wondering what the average life span is, and if health problems are common? I’ve read about some of them, but I’m not sure if they are really prevalent….advice???
