My mom has been in love with English Bulldoggs for many years. We (as a family) have always poo’d on her idea for having one, mainly because our vet called them a ‘vet’s pet’ because of so many health problems.

it seems like it’s so hard to come across a well made English Bulldog nowadays without risking hip or back problems, cherry eye, breathing problems, etc.

We are beginning our research into owning a Bulldog. Our plan is to finish finding our Aussie puppy, and then begin looking at upcoming Bulldog litters early next year.

Are they really such a health mess? We would want one that had show potential (It might be fun to show something smaller then an Aussie!) and i know that ones in town that are pieces of crap with no health testings can fetch 00 because they are "rare" up here.

Any advice on going about this?
bernese- I’d give my left kidney for a bulldog from Chaos :D

Should we adopt a low heartworm positive dog?

We are interested in adopting a dog from our local shelter. We have been informed that the dog is "low heartworm positive." The shelter advocates using heartgard as the sole treatment in cases like this. I am getting mixed responses from people about the risk we would be taking by adopting the dog. I have heard that just using the heartgard is safer but has its own risks on the dog’s health. We recently lost a very loved dog to cancer and I guess I am unsure about taking on a new dog with potential health problems. Thanks.

Does my dog need heartworm protection in CA?

I live in Washington now but am moving to California. In WA, dogs do not need heartworm prevention medication. What are the risks with giving a dog heartworm prevention medication? I don’t want my dog to get sick from the medication or from heartworms!
My dog has numerous allergies and other health problems, and every vet I’ve taken him to (many, as I have moved a few times since I’ve had him) in WA has told me he does not need heartworm protection here.

When I lived in OH, all the vets were very clear about needing it. I asked about it immediately upon moving to WA.
I’m so mad that a VET told me not to worry about it! ARGH!

Why does my 18 year old cat seem spaced out?

I have had my darling floss 17 years, she has never been overly affectionate but does like a cuddly now and then, she has developed several health problems in the last two years, including thyroid problems and high blood pressure for which see is on medication and regularly has check ups,In the last few months she has begun to seem confused and often sits and stares down at the floor or bed for a few minutes before circling 6 or 7 times then slowly sits down but all the while doing it very slowly. Its as though she forgets what she is doing and goes into a trance like state,I dont beleive she is in pain allthough I know cats dont show pain much.I dont know if she is starting to get feline dementia or if shes depressed or if is something else? It breaks my heart to see her so confused,I try and stimulate and play with her as much as her age and physically ability will allow her ,I have always cherished her and spoilt her but now she doesnt seem to respond to me hardly at all and doesnt respond to her name.Has any body got any ideas.
Thanks for reading this guys Angie (uk)

right dog for me? (please read entire question)?

i am looking for a new dog (not getting rid of my current one, so i would like the new one to be able to get along with other dogs) my current dog is a rat terrier that is sort of like a jack russel just taller, more hyper, and skinny. i am looking for a dog that i can take out into the woods and perhaps camp with that will stay by my side. if my current dog ever got out of they fenced in yard he would be gone and never come back (too stupid to listen when you call him) so i guess im looking for a dog that is very easy to train as far as voice commands go, and one without ADHD so he doesn’t chase tires of cars that go by. overall a good loyal outdoors dog that does good on both leash and free. a few dogs i considered are kishu inu’s, but they are hard to find in my area (Florida) i do not want a mutt. i have nothing against rescue animals or mutts, but its just not what im looking for, im looking for a pure breed, that is loyal to me but can get along with small dogs, babies, kids, and friends. easy to train with voice commands, and doesn’t chase everything it sees. barking is not an issue as long as it wills stop when i tell it to. (although i do want a dog with a deep intimidating bark to keep people away from my house when its in the yard, my little rat terriers yapping certainly doesn’t do the trick) and a light-medium shedder, dont feel like grooming it everyday.

concerns:
i cant have any dogs that would raise my homeowners insurance i.e. pitbulls or german Shepherds. i love them but cant have them

health problems are a big issue. i dont wunna spend every penny i have on fixing a dog.

so is there any breeds you suggest. lookin for medium – med/large size, but not huge. good around family & friends. DOESNT JUMP ON PPL, and is easy to teach voice commands (thats important, thats why i keep saying it) intimidating bark, not a lot of grooming, and lives long (dont want a great dog that lives 5 years.) suggestions?

Worried about my Bulldog…?

Our first Dog we decided to buy an English Bulldog from a breeder. We were given its immunization record that showed he was up to date with his vaccinations. (I can not prove this but my thought is the previous owners falsified these records). Never the less he became infected with Parvo virus after staying at a kennel when I was out of town. He was hospitalized and is now doing better. But I am worried about any side effects he might have because of the parvo virus. Does this virus cause any other health problems???? Also does anyone recommend pet health insurance???

some questions about neutering cats?

i have 3 male cats, all just turned a year old. we plan to start neutering them one by one within the next month but i have a few questions.

1. 2 of the cats fight a lot and have been since about the age of 9 months. assuming this is a territorial/hormone thing, will the fighting stop once they are neutered?

2. they also mark a lot. carpets, kitchen floor, bookcases, clothes if left on the floor, etc. will this also stop once neutered? they have no health problems and use the litter box fine, its just marking.

3. i plan to take them to the local SPCA. i have tried contacting them several times and never get an email reply and their phones are always busy when i have tried to call. to get them fixed it is required that they have a feline aids/leukemia test done and a rabies shot. is it ok/safe to get the test, rabies vacc AND neutering done all on the same day? or is it better to get the shot/test done days/weeks ahead of time?

I have joint custody of our son with my ex-husband. The child lives with me, but his father has custody at certain times and is supposed to be "jointly" responsible all the time along with me for the child’s well being, education and health. Our son has muscular dystrophy and a lot of other health problems. He is home-schooled. His father doesn’t pay court-ordered child support, health insurance or in any other way support the child. I pay for his schoolbooks, supplies, ect, completely by myself. Same for his numerous health expenses. I take him to physical therapist and his many doctor’s appointments. Except for my family helping when they can, (bless them) I pay for and do everything myself. His father doesn’t even talk to or see the child anymore. Now, if I didn’t take him to the doctor and make sure he was being properly educated, I would be charged with negligence and more than likely lose custody. Since his father has joint custody, shouldn’t he be held to the same standard? Shouldn’t he get in trouble and lose custody, just as I would, if he doesn’t make any effort to help feed, clothe, shelter or educate his son? Why is it that he can get off scot free, throwing away all parental resposibilty, and not get in trouble. The only legal thing I can do is take him to court for not paying his child support. He has, for all intents and purposes, abandoned his child. Except for the consequenses of not paying his child support, he has no more responsibilty for his child than a dog. What about the rest of it? How is that morally or legally alright? What do you think should happen when a parent does this?

I share joint custody with my ex-husband. The child lives with me, but his father is supposed to be "jointly" responsible with me for the child’s well being, education and health. Our son has muscular dystrophy and other severe health problems. He is home-schooled. His father doesn’t pay court-ordered child support, health insurance or in any other way support him. I pay for his schoolbooks, supplies, ect. I take him to the physical therapist and his various doctors, paying for everything not covered by insurance (insurance the father was ordered to provide, but doesn’t). In short, I’m being forced to pay for everything. His father refuses to talk to or see the child anymore. He makes no effort to help his child cope with his illness or be a "dad". If I didn’t take him to the doctor and make sure he was being properly educated, I would be charged with negligence and more than likely lose custody.
