About a month ago, my 7-8 year old male (altered/fixed, indoor only) cat began urinating outside of the litter box. He’s still using the litter box and drinking regularly, and so it does not seem to be exhibiting any signs of pain with urination, so I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have a urinary tract infection. That said, I do know that is a possibility he has a urinary problem rather than a behavior problem, so I’ve been treating him with some supplements that help treat urinary tract problems (specifically Nutri-Vet’s Uri-Ease – supports urinary tract health).
Obviously, if I could afford taking him to the vet, this would be much easier – unfortunately that isn’t an option right now. So I’m looking for some over the counter remedies. Though if he gets worse, or starts to give signs he’s in pain or there is any blood in his urine, we will definitely take him to a vet.
As I said, I don’t think it’s a UTI, because the volume of his urine hasn’t seemed to decrease and he doesn’t seem to be having pain with urination or at all. I think that it might be a behavior or anxiety problem. So far, he’s target things with strong smells of other things (like shoes, the front door [our neighborhood has a bad feral cat problem], and the new oven, among other things).
Two things have changed in the house prior to my cat’s new problem. The first thing was replacing the gas oven that didn’t work with one that did, and starting to use it. The second thing was replacing the carpeting in the bathroom and putting in tile (the cats had been using the carpeting to urinate on, and nothing was stopping it). Because of these changes, I think my cat’s spraying/urinating problem is behavior related rather than infection related.
I know there are over the counter pills I can get him, but I don’t know what to get or what works well. There are pills, treats, supplements, and even water treatment- but what works?! Also, just in case it IS an UTI, I would also appreciate some non-prescription options for treating an UTI with out having to visit a vet.
So if anyone out there has any advice, my cat would be much happier for it. If possible, please suggest specific items I can buy without searching all over the world (aka something I can get inexpensively over the internet or at a health food store). I’m open to homeopathic remedies, supplements, vitamins, whatever. I just need it to work, be cheap, and be available. Please recommend both regular, daily medication and short term use medication if possible!
Thanks in advance, everyone!!!
