My friends had this cat but wasn’t able to care for it anymore so she gave him to me. I already had two cats and couldn’t take on a third at the time so I gave the cat to a nice man I met off craigslist. He said Falcor (the cat) was doing great and loved his house. Sadly 2-4 weeks after this the man messaged me and told me that Falcor had died of Feline Leukemia and that the vet had tried to save him but it was to late and Falcor gave up his will to live. I have a 3 yrs old cat named Shadow and a 10 yr old cat named Diamonds. Within the past couple of months Shadows weight had been going up and down and he is even going to the bathroom in my room a little bit (he is litter box trained). It is not like him to do that…Diamonds doesn’t seem to have any symptoms of it, but I am still worried for both. I do not have the money to pay a vet rate now but will some vets do it for free and then I can pay them back within a certain amount of time? I will pay them back when I get a job (as I am only 16). For those who have heard about Riverside Animals Clinic in Lisbon Falls Maine USA do you know if they will do it. And if someone can give me all the info they know about this disease it would be very helpful. Thank you!

help with feline leukemia?

I’m really worried that my cat is susceptible to feline leukemia as my brothers cat, Domino, has just died from it 2 days ago. this is my first cat so i didn’t know much but i found out its contagious! my cat use to share the same bowl to eat and drink out of and even the same litter box. He doesn’t have his shots yet either, I plan to take him to finally get vaccinated on the 21st, but im afraid im too late. when i got home after Domino passed away i did my research and found it was contagious so i cleaned the bowls, changed the litter box and cleaned it, and even took him a shower. My cat sleeps all over the house though but i read the virus dies in a couple hours. I need help and I’m scared, do you think he has felv and if he does and its at early stage, is it curable? I dont have money to get him the test so is there also a way i can check if he does have it this early? any help will be fine, thank you.

I also plan to get him more food that will make his immune system stronger as i heard felv targets the immune system? should I?

feline leukemia shot?

my kitten is 2 months old and we brought him to the vet for a check since he wasnt eating. he is eating now, but the vet said he shouldnt be around my other cat since he hasnt got the felv shot. he seems very healthy since we gave him a bath (he had fleas and scabs) he has no more fleas, but i’m not sure what to do about my other cat playing with him. should we wait until he gets the shot to let them play? i’m making sure they dont use the same litter box or eat from the same bowl… i dont even know if my other cat has the shot.

the kitten seems very healthy now. what to do??
RIGHT NOW WE DONT know whether he has the virus or not..

Problem with Scoop able Litter turning to glue?

I’ve never had this problem before, always had cats. I have a covered cat box. I clean it every 2 days or so. But I changed brands of litter & the last 2 I bought, Scoop Away & Fresh Step, when I try scooping it out it is like trying to lift thick clay mud. It is all wet. My cats can’t be peeing that much, and always before it would just turn into a solid clump that I would lift out. I changed it again 2 days ago, checked it the next day, & it wasn’t mud yet but it was definetly getting wet & it was mucky already. It has been really humid here lately & I wondered if that was making it worse. I rarely even see my cats in the litter box so they can’t be peeing that much. I just changed it again and left the cover off of it to see if that helps. Any ideas or suggestions will be apprieciated. Thanks.
I have 3 cats, 2 babies & 1 fully grown cat. Started noticing it right after I got the kittens. Older cat barely uses the litter box, She goes outside.

Can cats be allergic to cat litter?

My cat is usually very tolerant of her litter box. but recently she has been urinating in other places, and having diarrhea . the only thing thats changed is what type of litter we use, from Fresh Step to a Biodigradible brand that has a really strong flowery scent. Could my cat be allergic?

I have a 6 month old male manx, his name is Achilles and he’s my pride and joy. He’s also a cabbit, meaning his hind legs are longer than his front legs, so he compensates by hopping on his hind legs instead of walking on them step by step. For those of you that aren’t familiar with Manx Syndrome, I’ll try to give as much information about the disease and it’s effect on Achilles.

The manx gene is extremely dominate when it comes to mating for pure-breeds, so it is actually very dangerous to mate two short-tail/no tail manxes; this is what causes Manx Syndrome. (It’s confusing to me how Achilles was even born with the disease since his mother wasn’t even a manx; only his father.) I’ve heard it’s very similar to Spina Bifida. Since Achilles is a no tail manx, he has a shortened spine and specific vertebrae in his spine can be linked to his weakened organs, especially his digestion, bowels, and bladder control. He has no problem knowing when he has to go and always makes it to the litter box, it’s only finishing his business he struggles with. I’m not sure if it’s weakened muscles that give him trouble pushing out his stools or if he can even feel anything back there, but I always find little turds near or around the litter box after he jumps out because he thinks he finished. Other than a nasty case of tapeworm that I immediately treated when he was given to me, Achilles has had no other health problems.

I took him to the vet to have him tested because his father was diagnosed with feline AIDS; fortunately, Achilles’s test came back negative. The veterinarian was very puzzled by his appearance and when I asked him if Manx Syndrome was a progressive or regressive disease, he honestly replied that my cat was the first manx he’d ever seen and knew nothing about his condition or breed.

I’m just curious to know if my little guy will be in kitty diapers in the next few years or if there’s anything I can do (i.e. other types of food, massage, or any other type of therapy) to slow the condition if it is progressive.

I clean out the litter box and the kitten was received a month after wife got pregnant. Older cat is indoor cat like kitten is. They never go outside however I worry that the kitten could have got toxoplasmosis from nursing mother cat’s milk which was an outside cat living among about 10 other cats. I always clean out litter box. I’ve heard that cats who have this pass it their feces in about 10 days, then they become immune. Any comfroting words or people out there who’ve been pregnant and had cats as pets. Older cat has has all it’s vaccinations. However young kitten is soon to get them. Should I worry abouyt my wife getting it? what should I do?

We recently got a kitten that is 8 weeks old. We were advised to put her in a bathroom with the litter box. How long do we need to keep her confined before can let her roam free? Also we have Fresh Step litter. I am currently not seeing any urine clumps, is it because she has so little urine at this age?

Does my kitten have feline leukemia?

I adopted a kitten from a local shelter about 2 weeks ago. He was sent home with antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection. When the antibiotics were finishes he started showing symptoms again (runny nose, congestion, watery eyes, sneezing). I took him to my vets office and they said that his lungs were clear and it was just in his nose and gave me more antibiotics to give him. Then the vet said that he could have feline leukemia but he was too little to be tested and to just keep it in the back of my mind that it is a possibility. He is playing, eating, drinking, going potty as usual but he is just so congested. What are the chances that he does have this deadly disease and can he be tested? He only ways 1 pound and my family is completely in love with him but he can’t seem to kick this URI. What should I do??
the kitten is about 7 weeks old. I went and adopted him on a wed but the shelter said that because of the uri he would have to stay for antibiotics. Six days later they called and said that I could pick him up because some of the other kittens were getting worse and he was doing better. They didn’t want him to have a relapse. It seems that he has already. I adopted him for the same reason that anyone does. I believe that animals pick their people. When we went to look at the kittens he was crawling up the cage door trying to get to us. He was beautiful and found a way into our hearts immediately. Other than a stuffy nose he was not sickly. This is still the only symptom that he shows. He plays with the dogs, chases my daughter, eats plenty of food, and definitely fills his litter box.

About a month ago, my 7-8 year old male (altered/fixed, indoor only) cat began urinating outside of the litter box. He’s still using the litter box and drinking regularly, and so it does not seem to be exhibiting any signs of pain with urination, so I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have a urinary tract infection. That said, I do know that is a possibility he has a urinary problem rather than a behavior problem, so I’ve been treating him with some supplements that help treat urinary tract problems (specifically Nutri-Vet’s Uri-Ease – supports urinary tract health).

Obviously, if I could afford taking him to the vet, this would be much easier – unfortunately that isn’t an option right now. So I’m looking for some over the counter remedies. Though if he gets worse, or starts to give signs he’s in pain or there is any blood in his urine, we will definitely take him to a vet.

As I said, I don’t think it’s a UTI, because the volume of his urine hasn’t seemed to decrease and he doesn’t seem to be having pain with urination or at all. I think that it might be a behavior or anxiety problem. So far, he’s target things with strong smells of other things (like shoes, the front door [our neighborhood has a bad feral cat problem], and the new oven, among other things).

Two things have changed in the house prior to my cat’s new problem. The first thing was replacing the gas oven that didn’t work with one that did, and starting to use it. The second thing was replacing the carpeting in the bathroom and putting in tile (the cats had been using the carpeting to urinate on, and nothing was stopping it). Because of these changes, I think my cat’s spraying/urinating problem is behavior related rather than infection related.

I know there are over the counter pills I can get him, but I don’t know what to get or what works well. There are pills, treats, supplements, and even water treatment- but what works?! Also, just in case it IS an UTI, I would also appreciate some non-prescription options for treating an UTI with out having to visit a vet.

So if anyone out there has any advice, my cat would be much happier for it. If possible, please suggest specific items I can buy without searching all over the world (aka something I can get inexpensively over the internet or at a health food store). I’m open to homeopathic remedies, supplements, vitamins, whatever. I just need it to work, be cheap, and be available. Please recommend both regular, daily medication and short term use medication if possible!

Thanks in advance, everyone!!!
-MK

What are the chances she has Feline Leukemia?

OK so we adopted a cat from a no-kill shelter yesterday. They do not test for Feline Leukemia or Feline AIDS. They rescue animals from the high-kill shelters so if an animal comes in from there, they are already tested.

This cat was a return from someone who said she had litter box issues (she hasn’t yet) and they can’t find the test on file. They are going to test her when I take her back for shots on Wednesday Sept 2nd, but I am worried about getting too attached.

She was in her cage most of the time and has been at the shelter for 3 months. She was previously adopted from the same shelter and then returned. She was 10-12 weeks old when she was returned. She seems to have a healthy appetite and goes to the bathroom.

Anyone know what the chances might be that she has feline leukemia or feline AIDS?
Please note, she is isolated right now.
The shelter only has clinic hours on Monday’s & Wednesday’s. If I take her to the shelter it is like for the test. The vet charges . I changed the appointment to Monday which is the earliest I can get

At first I tried the cheapest they have at WalMart (Cats Pride) and it is like sand and went everywhere….but it kept the odor down.

Now I am using Fresh Step, and it gets tracked out of the litter box just as bad even though it’s the clay kind, and it smells a lot worse.

Any recomendations?
I have a rug under it too….

what sucks is I am a college student and don’t have a vaccume cleaner…I just borrow one from my friend every other week or so…lol…I would bye one but my mother says my aunt is "surprising me with a really nice one that I’ll be able to keep forever" for Christmas…lol…but that sure will help for the next 5 months!

Cat with no vaccinations?

I have just got a cat. She is 6 months old. Is she still classed a "kitten". Also i have a 2 year old child. Is it ok to be around the cat without it having its vaccinations. Also should the cat be eating adult cat food or kitten food? I have looked at a few sites but nothing is too clear. What about worming?Should that be done now. One more thing is it normal for a cat to poop around the house. Just this morning found one in the sitting room. EHHH… litter box at the back door.
please help.
Thank you to you she will be getting immunised asap.

We use a mixture of Fresh Step Clay, Clumping and Crystal Litters for our 1.5 year old cat. We have a covered litter box and a mat in front of it. But without fail we will find little bits of kitty litter in our bed, all over the floor, and on the couch. Any ideas that would minamize this problem would be greatly apprecited!
