How does pet health insurance work?

Is it like human health insurance where most of the time they will not cover pre-existing conditions?

My cat has epilepsy and the seizures are becoming more frequent recently. The vet told us before that there is a medication they can try to give her to stop the seizures. Problem is, it’s very very expensive and would be a daily thing.

So, if we were to get insurance for her now, could we then take her to the vet so the medication would be covered by the insurance?

Thanks :)

Pet insurance for puppy/dog?

Know any good pet healthcare insurance?

Okay my puppy is going to be 8 weeks old tomorrow and I don’t know what healthcare pet insurance to get. I need a healthcare plan that cover the doctor visits, dental cleaning, shots such as parvo, xray, body checkup, and etc.

As for accident cases, god forbid my new puppy will be in an accident where she have rat poison, run over by a car, and etc. That I will either have to save money aside for my pet emergency. But I would like a pet insurance to cover this as well.

My puppy is a Akc Siberian husky. Im willing to pay 50 bucks per month for my pet healthcare.

Im looking for a pet hospital or clinic that will give all my puppy’s shots need. I’m so afraid she will catch parvo and dies. Oh another thing is I need to buy medication that prevent fleas and heartworms or whatever that will cause my pet to be sick.

Oh one more thing when my pup reach her first heat/pms I will have to get her spray. I hope it will cover in the pet insurance

Why does my 18 year old cat seem spaced out?

I have had my darling floss 17 years, she has never been overly affectionate but does like a cuddly now and then, she has developed several health problems in the last two years, including thyroid problems and high blood pressure for which see is on medication and regularly has check ups,In the last few months she has begun to seem confused and often sits and stares down at the floor or bed for a few minutes before circling 6 or 7 times then slowly sits down but all the while doing it very slowly. Its as though she forgets what she is doing and goes into a trance like state,I dont beleive she is in pain allthough I know cats dont show pain much.I dont know if she is starting to get feline dementia or if shes depressed or if is something else? It breaks my heart to see her so confused,I try and stimulate and play with her as much as her age and physically ability will allow her ,I have always cherished her and spoilt her but now she doesnt seem to respond to me hardly at all and doesnt respond to her name.Has any body got any ideas.
Thanks for reading this guys Angie (uk)

Are there any symptoms of Lyme disease that last a long time after the disease has been ‘dealt with’? My friend got it last August, and was on the medication for a month. Supposedly he was cured of it, but are there any side effects that could linger forever?

We have lot of stray kittens in my area and one of them is very much attached to my family as we feed her.. She just won all hearts of my entire family.. Suddenly she went missing and we were worried until we found her back injured, lean and with foul smell.. I rushed to take her to the vet and after examinations he gave her a couple of shots and some medication.. She looked better in a couple of days and the foul smell vanished considerable but still she dint eat or drink anything yet, when asked the Vet insisted me to take her to a big veterinary hospital and undergo few tests.. After blood tests and giving her some intravenous hydration, the doctor thinks that she might have Feline Distemper.. I am pretty much worried, though she’s a stray kitten I really can’t gulp up this news and I am worried for her.. What else can I do, I am taking care of her well with all medications insisted.. But please pray for her good health, I want her back like before.. :(

Paranoid, anxiety, HELP.?

I’ve always been an anxious person since I was young but this has just gotten out of hand. A little background on me: I’m a 21 year old, female. Since I was 17 I have been moving around from place to place, settling down for a couple months, heading back home for a couple months and then off to somewhere new. I’ve been home now since early July, have a steady job and living situation and just recently became involved in a relationship with a guy I’ve known for years. I have no intentions of leaving the area anytime soon.
My problems started a couple months ago. I’m such an anxious wreak all of the time it’s affecting my work, the relationship I’m trying to get going with this guy I really care about and even the relationship with my family. I’m on edge all the time, I’m paranoid about the most outlandish things, absurdly irritable and on top of it all I have this constant, awful [head feels like it's going to pop, butterflies in my stomach, pressure on my chest] anxiety.
Like I said, I’ve always been anxious and I’ve always been able to deal with it. Jogging or biking is always how I’ve dealt with it in the past but this is just so out of hand. It’s like I’m constantly PMSing (and no, I’m definitely not pregnant.) I have no health insurance and between my bills, food and my dog, I have no money to splurge and see a doctor. I’ve never been a supporter of non-homeopathic medication, I won’t even take pain killers, but at this point..bring on the drugs! Any advice at all would be very, very, very much appreciated.

Also, I realize that it’s all probably a result of being cooped up like this when it’s not what I’m used to but I’ve been unstable for far too long. Stability, my family, my job, this guy; this is all what I really want right now.
I’m not at all ashamed of this, I just quite literally have no money to see a doctor. Unless someone can recommend some kind of low cost way to see a therapist? hah

Is the threat of heartworm in dogs real?

In the latest trend of people opting out giving vaccinations to their pets (and children!) and the recent increase of online discount pet medication stores, I wonder if the threat of heartworm is real? Or is it more of a way for vets to increase lost revenue? I live in Oregon and don’t give my pets heartworm meds. They both tested negative at their recent checkup. Each time I go to my vet I get solicited for heartworm meds at least 3 times. When I say no, I get "the look". Not only does this make me want to say no even more, I am thinking of changing vets. Does anyone know the real statistics on heartworm and how prevalant the disease is in the USA?

Can Lyme disease come back after treatment?

I had it for a little over month maybe even 2 months before I was diagnosed. I had to take 3 pills of antibotics a day for 3 weeks but I usually would only take 1 pill a day and sometimes even no pill a day from being busy. During the medication the symptoms went away and now that I’m done medication it seems like they’re coming back? So could that be the lyme desease again?

Our family lives on a gravel road of with several farms and a few weeks ago my father fell off his horse. He was riding it down the road when a neighbors lab went onto the street from the yard and started to bark, growl, and bite at the horse’s legs. The horse was scared and started to kick at the dog with his hind legs. My dad was trying to dismount, but the horse actually stood on his hind legs and my father fell off.

I saw the whole thing from the patio and when I heard and saw the horse in distress I quickly ran down the road. By the time I got there my dad was already on the ground, his neighbor had called in his dog and was also coming to my dad’s aid. My dad seemed slightly dazed and when I got him to stand he was limping, but he said he wasn’t really in pain.

The neighbor was was very apologetic and asked if he wanted him to call 911. There was a clear swelling and bruising on his right shin when he lifted up his pant leg, but he told the neighbor that he wasn’t in dire pain to where he needed an ambulance, that he would have me drive him to the ER. We decided to walk back home and the neighbor said tell me what happens and update me.

After walking back to the house my mom inspected him and he had several more bruises and decided we should go to the doctor. The ER took some x-rays and gave him some pain medication for his pain, which he was now in. They said he didn’t break his leg, but had sprained it.

Well after receiving the medical bills, it was about two thousand dollars. My dad doesn’t have health insurance and told the neighbor if he could pay for the medical bills (whether out of pocket or through homeowners insurance). Our neighbor is saying that it’s not his fault my dad fell.

I looked up the laws in our township and it clearly states that all dogs must be on a leash when off your property. So is the neighbor responsible since his unleashed dog went onto the road and startled the horse, causing my dad to fall. Doesn’t homeowners insurance cover your pets? If that’s the case why won’t the neighbor file a claim, what can my dad do? The neighbor also says that if he has to pay for my dads medical bills then my dad should pay for his dog’s vet bill, since the horse broke his dogs leg when it kicked it. Now I’m no genius, but his dog bit the horse and ran on the road so isn’t he responsible for everything considering the local ordinances?

I was diagnosed with lyme and the only medication I had was two weeks of doxycycline. I understand that there is more to the treatment than that. I have so many symptoms of lyme and even some of the coinfections. But my doctor just shrugs me off .I have an appointment with the infectuous disease doctor, but it’s a month away. And I don’t know of any llmds in San Diego.

My cat has feline leukemia does he have much time?

He hasn’t been eating for a while, but his colon was blocked and they unblocked it, but now hes not eating anything, and I have to give half a pill every 12 hours and he should eat in 24, but it’s almost been 12 hours and he still hasn’t eaten. He walks around the house just pacing, and he tries to squeeze between corners that he has no way of getting through and then starts meowing if he gets stuck, but he doesn’t want us to get him out, he wants to walk forward. He just gets mad if we pull him back. He doesn’t rub up against anyone or responds if someone pets him. He will just pace around, and then lay down. I figure that there is no hope for him. I think that by friday we will be putting him down. Do you think that maybe he will go back to normal? It’s worse I think to have him walk around like that then to be dead. I think it’s harder anyways. They did give him some medication, but that was over 24 hours ago and it wasn’t that much the vet said she would use only a little to make him calm during x rays. He has been pacing for a couple of days now, but not to the point of running into walls. I wish that I can say goodbye to my normal cat. Do you think he’ll get any better?
he is 10 years old and was just diagnosed today, but had been getting skinnier for almost a month, and his colon was blocked and now unblocked, but he is still not eating.

Feline AIDS (FIV)…. Vet waiting for call!?

My cat started losing weight a year or two ago and he was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. He never really gained the weight back and I did worry about his health some but we were doing all we could. He’s been on pills for that. Two days ago, when he got up, he was making weird sounds and attempting to throw up, but without doing so. I called the vet but also thought he was coughing up a furball.

The vet did a blood test and he has feline AIDS, or FIV. He is critical now; it is apparently in an advanced stage. He does look to be in discomfort and very lethargic and such. Can anyone tell me something about this such as… Well, the vet said I could bring him home on pain medication if I wanted. They are waiting for me to call and say what to do. I don’t want the cat to suffer but I also don’t want to euthanize him if he could maybe recover enough to live happy for awhile.

Does anyone have experience with this disease? What should I do? I said I would call within an hour or so. Thanks.

P.S. This cat is the only reason I have to live at all. There is NOTHING else good in my life. The only reason I ever get up at all is because I know he will be around.

health Dr.s say "you have [this horrible disease/illness] take [this drug] to get over it." medication helps you get better, your health insurance covers the medication.

eye Dr.s says "you are [nearsighted] you need glasses" you chose the frames, then the Dr gives whoever needs it that prescription. the glasses improve your eyesight. your health insurance covers the glasses.

therapists are Dr’s. your therapist says "man, are you crrrraaaaa-Z! take this [anti-phsycosis medication]" you take it, get better, your health insurance covers the pills.

therapists are Dr’s. they are the ones that say "you have [this psychiatric problem] you should get a service dog" you pay hundreds of dollars for the dog/dog supplies, then finally, if you had to train the dog yourself(or with help which costs $$), or if you are on a waiting list, after possibly months, or a year, you get the dog. the dog HELPS, just like the medication, glasses and anti-psychosis medication does.

why doesnt health insurance cover the dog?
D.R.Brushmore: that makes sence, but if a DR says "take this drug" and that makes it legal for you to have the drug/medication.

if the terapist says you should get a PSD, than its kinda more than a pet, and even falls under the ADA, allowed in stores/resturaunts, and applies to the fair housing acts. so you can have the dog where your normally wouldnt, i hoped i eplained it ok, but it just seems kinda ironic.

Most politicians stand up and talk about how they’re going to fix health care. The free markets have failed health care, etc.

However, isn’t it the politicians who have forced Hospitals to give away free services? Try setting up a Hot Dog stand with the government telling you that you have to give them away for free to anyone who asks. How long will you stay in business?

They’ve allowed lawyers to sue doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies to no end.

If you write a book or a song (in a matter of days) you can get royalties from that for decades to come. Cure cancer, and after paying millions, sometimes billions to discover and market it, nearly 1 billion to get it FDA approved, you have only 7 years to earn back what you’ve put into it and make a profit so that you have capital to cure something else.

Don’t we want people taking risks to cause disease and allow them to profit greatly if they do?

So, isn’t it government that screwed it up and want more govt. to fix it?
I’m not going to claim that all medical providers, insurance companies, and pharmaceuticals are saints, however the free market will push prices down. It’s not those things that has made the system as screwed up as it is.
You make some good points and I agree with you that physicians can and should be sued when there is negligance. However it’s become a new type of lottery among patients and lawyers. How many of us have had a day at work without making a mistake, yet we expect perfection from doctors. If a doctor is operating druk or removes the wrong kidney, that’s an appropriate lawsuit, however most are frivolous.

for your medication….did you account for the R&D, insurance, FDA approval, marketing, and all other expenses that were incurred by that division while they were developing that drug? My guess is that the pill that cures cancer will only cost about to manufacture as well.
Doctors go to extreme lengths to get the education that they do. And the cost goes well beyond the time and the money. These are the poeple who help us heal when we’re sick or fix us when we’re hurt.

Doctors have to work more and more, they make less and less, and have to put up with more crap than ever. Again, the message we’re sending is: "If you work hard, and make good money, maybe we can sue you and take it all away".

30 years ago there was a lot more motivation to be a doctor than there is today. In Nevada it’s VERY difficult to get an appointment with an OBGYN….even if you’re pregnant.

Who will you feel sorry for when your spouse dies because there’s no physicain available to remove her burst appendix??? Shouldn’t we make it good for people to do things that are good for us rather than bad???

How much would you have to make to incur 200k in debt while you went to school for 12 years after high school (getting only top grades)???
