We will be getting a small dog in a matter of time, and were thinking about setting up an invisible fence for the dog so we would not have to mask our yard behind a fence; problem is, we have no experience with these fences so what type of fence would you reccomend for a dog?
ok it seems like an "invisible fence" is not too popular. Well then what type of fence should I get?

Take a look at this website. It will answer all you questions. I agree with the other comments that if you are concerned about other dogs coming into your yard this type of fencing might not be for you. The people that say the shock is cruel or the system does not work are not familiar with the Pet Stop Brand of fences. These fences are installed only by authorized dealers who undergo extensive training. Also the shock is not the same for all dogs. The Pet Stop Elite receiver weighs just 1.3 ounces and has a low battery light on it. It alos is capable of over 5000 different programming including ( delay timing between beep and shock- immediately, .5 seconds, 1 second, or 2 seconds; shock levels that vary from a tickle to a stronger shock- when the training is done it will start with beep only and then move to a low shock setting in a couple of days and then up to the shock setting determined to be correct for the dog; to a modulation change that will allow the receiver to work on most other brands of electronic fences)
Take a look at the website and determine for yourself it has a lot of information be sure to use the dealer locator to find your local dealer. Feel free to contact your local dealer they will be more than happy to talk with you and answer any questions you may have.
you can set up these laser beam thingies and everytime it senses the dogs collar come near he gets a zap- sounds kinda cruel to me
None! Don’t get an invisible fence. You don’t zap a dog, especially a small dog. You could have all sort of repercussions because of an invisible fence and collar. If your dog got out he could not get back in. Any animal or person could come into that invisible fence. You get a fake sense of security with that fence because as I said your dog could easily get out.
I have an invisible fence for my labrador retriever. I actually just installed it myself two weeks ago. I bought one by Innotek (http://www.innotek.net/). It has worked out great for us. My dog doesn’t challenge the fence.
Most people that don’t like invisible fences don’t like it because other dogs can come onto your property. If you’re getting a small dog, you might want to think about that. You might not want to leave the dog alone all day outside because if another dog came in, there could be a fight and a small dog could get seriously injured. But if you just want to be able to play in the back yard with your dog, invisible fence would work great no matter the size. You’ll be there to supervise. If you see another dog coming you can scoop yours up!
And if you train your dog properly, it probably won’t run through the fence. Some breeds have a harder time than others. Perhaps a terrier wouldn’t be able to overcome it’s drive to chase a squirrel out of your yard. But most dogs are capable of learning and following the rules of an electric fence.
Oh yeah, and there is a weight requirement for invisible fences. Under 10 pounds (I think), and you can’t use it. So make sure the breed you want is above the weight requirement.
You can’t be serious with the invisible fence. Imagine yourself wearing a collar and getting juiced every time you go too far from the house. That’s inhumane.
There are many attractive physical fences that you can install that will add value to your property.
